In-House Legal Department Advisory · Hong Kong

Advisory for general counsel who want their department to perform well.

Gambit House works alongside heads of legal and general counsel in Hong Kong to address the strategy, structure, and operating questions that shape how in-house departments function — separate from the substantive matters those departments handle.

Our Engagements

Three ways we work with in-house legal teams

Each engagement addresses a different layer of the department's operating shape — from a multi-month strategic review to a focused single-day workshop. All are concerned with strategy and process, not the substantive matters the department handles.

Departmental Strategy Engagement

Departmental Strategy Engagement

A multi-month engagement supporting the general counsel or head of legal in shaping the department's structure, vendor relationships, internal-service model, and operating cadence. Output includes a written strategy memo, a phased plan, and structured working sessions.

  • Written strategy memo delivered at close
  • Phased operational plan with leadership team
  • Vendor relationship and service-model review

Department Diagnostic Review

Department Diagnostic Review

A focused diagnostic reviewing the department's current operating shape — team composition, workflow, vendor mix, technology base, and stakeholder satisfaction — producing a written diagnostic memo with structural observations.

  • Current-state review across all operating dimensions
  • Written diagnostic memo with structural observations
  • Useful ahead of wider strategy work or during transitions

Operating Cadence Workshop

Operating Cadence Workshop

A short engagement — typically a single working day — addressing how the department plans, reviews, and reports its work internally. Produces a written cadence memo with observations for departments refreshing internal rhythms without a full review.

  • Single-day format, minimal business disruption
  • Written cadence memo with actionable observations
  • Planning, review, and reporting cycles addressed

Why Gambit House

What sets this practice apart

The advisory is built around the operational reality of in-house legal work in Hong Kong — not the assumptions of consulting firms that have never sat in a general counsel's chair.

Advisors who have held in-house roles

The perspectives brought to each engagement draw on direct experience of the pressures, politics, and operating constraints that general counsel face day to day.

Written deliverables at every stage

Each engagement produces a written memo — strategy, diagnostic, or cadence — that the department retains as a working document rather than a slide deck that ages quickly.

Grounded in Hong Kong's operating context

The practice is based in Admiralty and focuses on the Hong Kong and wider regional market — the regulatory environment, vendor landscape, and talent dynamics here are well understood.

Direct engagement with the general counsel

Engagements are conducted by senior advisors, not delegated to junior staff. The person you speak with at the outset is the person leading the work.

Strategy and operations, not legal advice

The practice is deliberately positioned as strategy and operations advisory — separate from the substantive legal work the department does. That clarity matters for both parties.

Engagements scaled to what is actually needed

From a single-day workshop to a multi-month strategy engagement, the scope is chosen to match the department's situation — not sized to maximise advisory revenue.

Start the Conversation

Is this the right moment to look at how your department is structured?

Many general counsel find it useful to step back from the day-to-day and take a considered look at whether the department's shape — its structure, vendors, and internal rhythms — still fits where the business is heading. That is precisely what these engagements are designed for.

Common Questions

Questions we are often asked

What kinds of departments does Gambit House typically work with?

We work with in-house legal departments of substantial companies operating in or from Hong Kong — typically departments of between four and thirty people, at a moment when the general counsel wants to think carefully about how the department is structured and how it operates. That might be a newly appointed head of legal, a department preparing for expansion, or a team working through a change in the business's direction.

What does "strategy and operations advisory" mean in practice — and what is it not?

Strategy and operations advisory addresses questions about how the department is organised, how it sources and manages outside advisors, how its team is structured, and how it plans and reports its work. It does not involve advising on the substantive legal matters the department handles — contracts, regulatory questions, disputes, and so on. That distinction is important. We are working on the operating shape of the department, not on the legal work it does.

How long does a typical engagement run?

The Departmental Strategy Engagement runs over several months, with structured working sessions alongside ongoing advisory access. The Department Diagnostic Review is typically completed within three to four weeks. The Operating Cadence Workshop is a single working day. We are clear about timelines at the outset and hold to them.

How should I think about which engagement is appropriate for my department?

The Diagnostic Review is a natural starting point if you are not yet sure what the right questions are — it produces a clear picture of the current operating shape and typically surfaces the issues worth addressing. The Strategy Engagement then becomes the right vehicle once you know what you want to work on. The Cadence Workshop is most useful for departments where the operating structure is broadly sound but the internal rhythms of planning and reporting have drifted or need refreshing.

Are the engagement fees all-inclusive?

Yes. The fees listed — HKD 7,800 for the Departmental Strategy Engagement, HKD 3,400 for the Diagnostic Review, and HKD 980 for the Cadence Workshop — are the total engagement fees. There are no additional charges for working sessions, written deliverables, or access to advisors during the engagement period.
